When Mother means the world to us | Niyogi Books

Mother’s Day is a celebration of the unique role of mothers in the lives of families and nations around the world. Observed on the second Sunday of May in India and many countries worldwide, Mother’s Day is that one day of the year when families pause to reflect on the joy that a mother brings to a home. Family members celebrate the mother’s presence by giving her a card, flowers, gifts, taking her out for a meal or taking on her usual chores to give her a day of rest. Mother’s Day is also celebrated on different dates in certain other countries, however the sentiment remains the same—to express love and affection for one’s mother and remind her of how special she is. While Mother’s Day may have become commercialized with greeting card companies, florists, jewellery, apparel and consumer goods firms advertising their wares with special Mother’s Day offers, the sentiment of recognizing the mother’s contribution to the family, society and the nation as a whole is a laudable one.If anyone deserves a day of pampering it’s surely a mother, who usually puts her needs last while fulfilling the expectations of everyone else in the family. Even today, mother’s take on most of the parenting responsibilities. The part played by a mother in raising young children and guiding their learning, play and activities, as they negotiate the difficult path to adulthood is a complex and challenging one that calls for the skills of an excellent manager, psychologist, nurse, nutritionist, chef, incredibly patient listener, shoulder to cry on and chief encourager at all times. The contribution of the mother in nurturing and providing care for her home and all the members of her family is a role that cannot be truly accounted for in economic terms. The mother’s active contribution in raising young children and ensuring the health, wellbeing and care of all her family members is a very significant input in the health and development of a nation. As more women enter the organised workforce, nations around the world are slowly becoming aware of the importance of motherhood by granting working women more flexibility in terms of maternity leave, work from home options, childcare at or near the workplace, and leave for taking careof children or aged family members. Many women are also becoming entrepreneurs and thus find a balance between their roles as mothers and as independent women. Thus the role of motherhood is also being redefined in these rapidly changing times. This Mother’s Day, let us all resolve to appreciate the special woman who has given us the precious gift of life and done so much to make our world a better place.  We wish all mothers a very happy Mother’s Day!
If baby only wanted to, he could fly up to heaven this moment. It is not for nothing that he does not leave us. He loves to rest his head on mother's bosom, and cannot ever bearto lose sight of her.... He knows that there is room for endless joy in mother's little corner of a heart, and it is sweeter far than liberty to be caught and pressed in her dear arms... —Rabindranath Tagore, “Baby’s Way”.
